Venezuela spots five American F-35 war jets near its coastal borders

Venezuela has accused the USA of illegally flying F-35 fighter planes near its borders, using Dutch colonial airspace in the Caribbean to prepare an attack on Caracas.

Foreign Minister Yvan Gil Pinto said the illegal incursion was detected on Thursday around 75 kilometers off the coast near the city of Maiquetia. He denounced the maneuvers as a provocation that threatens national sovereignty and violates international law.

Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez claimed that at least five F-35s were spotted flying at a speed of 400 knots and an altitude of 35,000 feet. He noted it was the first time aircraft of this type had been deployed in the area.

Brian Finucane, a former legal expert for the State Department, told the Intercept that the attacks are flat-out murder. The Venezuelan government have accused the USA of waging undeclared war and called for the United Nations to investigate.

The New York Times said the US president had “grown frustrated” that Maduro would not voluntarily relinquish power and that Venezuelan officials continued to deny involvement in drug trafficking.

According to the NYT, before diplomatic channels were severed, Grenell was trying to make a deal that would avoid a larger conflict and give American companies full access to Venezuelan oil.
