Americans eat an estimated 4.5 billion (with a B) tacos per year, according to the website TacoTuesday.com. It’s unclear where that number comes from, but considering I personally eat about a million of that billion, it’s a pretty easy number to believe. And while any taco is cause for fanfare, Yelp has officially uncovered the very best taco in the U.S.—and it’s precisely where you’d expect.
On Oct. 2, Yelp unveiled its list of the Top 100 Taco Spots for 2025, as determined by Yelp reviewers. It created the list by identifying the restaurants with a “large concentration of reviews mentioning ‘tacos,'” and then ranked those spots using several factors, including “the total volume and ratings of reviews mentioning ‘tacos.'”
After crunching numbers, it named Birrieria Familia Castro, located in North Hollywood, California, as the top spot.
According to Yelp, it won out thanks to its “closely guarded family recipe for birria” that its users say is “like a warm hug on a winter night.”
“Our birria is a family tradition passed down from my grandmother, who learned it from her mother,” Anthony Castro, who owns the restaurant alongside his parents, shared about the recipe that takes three to four hours each day to perfect.
Yelp explained that the most popular orders here are the “juicy” birria tacos, the vampiros, and mulitas—although Yelpers noted that they’re all made better with the restaurant’s housemade consommé.
“The [5-star] rating is very well deserved,” Yelp reviewer Jonathan R noted. “I had an asada taco, a birria taco, and an asada mulita. All were absolutely fantastic! In my opinion, the best tacos don’t need anything more than well-marinated meat, onions, cilantro, and a little sauce, and these absolutely delivered. (The avocado sauce was the perfect complement to the tacos.) The Castros’ son, Anthony, stopped by the table to chat and was really welcoming.”
Other spots to make it to the top of the list include Birria-Landia in Brooklyn at No. 2; followed by Paprika ATX in Austin; Roundhouse Deli in Roseville, California; and Holbox in Los Angeles, rounding out the top five.
In case you missed it, California was named a few times in that top five. In fact, according to Yelp, 45 of the top 100 spots are located in the Golden State. Other top states included Texas (nine spots), Arizona (eight spots), and Hawaii (seven spots). Don’t worry if you’re in the other 47 states, as you can find excellent tacos in each and every one.
