For a while there, it seemed like Elizabeth Olsen was fully done with her role as Wanda Maximoff in the MCU, which spanned from 2015’s Age of Ultron to 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. She recently returned to voice Scarlet Witch in the animated Marvel Zombies, out this past week, which gave fans hope. But she recently revealed she recorded those lines years ago. Bummer.
But not so much a bummer, it turns out. In an interview at the LA Comic Con alongside faux-husband Paul Bettany, about to reappear in VisionQuest, Olsen went deep into Wanda’s character and her future, which is something she has almost never talked about in recent years other than to strongly imply she was done. Now, that doesn’t seem like it’s the case.
Via Screenrant, when asked about what storyline she’d like to star in: “I think House of M is just the coolest,” she said. “I just think it could be so fun to deal with X-Men and Avengers and ‘No more mutants.’ It would be fun.”
What she would not want to do: “I just made a movie about a woman who’s choosing between her two dead husbands in the afterlife, so I feel okay with not doing another movie about two men wanting my love for a minute,” referring to a comic love triangle between Vision and Wonder Man (Wonder Man who is getting his own show shortly in the MCU)
And what she wants for the MCU going forward: “I hope we continue to surprise ourselves and the audience. I think that’s what keeps people coming back, is to not rely on old tricks. So that’s what I hope for.”
The use of “we” there is certainly telling.
Multiverse of Madness
Marvel
This is a pretty big deal because Olsen’s Maximoff has not been confirmed for any other projects, though it seems she could A) appear in VisionQuest, given that it’s about her robot husband and B) appear as a surprise guest in Avengers Doomsday, given her connection to Doom in the comics. Then, the MCU will move into the X-Men in its next phase, and that’s where House of M comes in.
Olsen previously talked about how she was now picking other projects instead of doing more Marvel because it “takes up so much physical time and space in the world, [and] it’s really important for me to make choices outside of Marvel that reflect my own taste.” This was in March, and she also said she would not appear in Doomsday or Secret Wars, and she was about to start filming a TV show, Seven Sisters, which would obviously take up time.
But it is hard to view her most recent comments as anything other than an indication that she is willing and ready to return to the MCU at some point, and still consider herself a part of it. If she really is not in Doomsday or Secret Wars (I can’t imagine she would have more than a short stint in VisionQuest), that would mean she wouldn’t even need to think about being back until the X-Men era kicks off. Secret Wars does not air until December 17, 2027, and it seems that if the X-Men begin immediately after that, we’re not talking about her possibly appearing until at least mid 2028. So yes, that’s certainly a lot of space, and it would be a full six years since Multiverse of Madness at this point. She’ll be back.
