Graham Potter gives an amusing response after being asked about the face swap trend currently doing the rounds on social media.
The West Ham head coach, currently under pressure with five defeats in their opening six games this season, was in his press conference ahead of the game away at Everton which takes place on Monday night live on Sky Sports.
Fans and social media users have been editing Potter’s face onto the bodies of celebrities, historical figures, TV characters, politicians.
The trend began as West Ham supporters vented online about the team’s form. Early edits placed Potter’s face on notorious figures like dictators (e.g., Adolf Hitler or Kim Jong-un) and criminals.
It then quickly escalated beyond criticism into comedy, and now these edits have turn turned into Twitter threads and compilation videos of the best ones, racking up thousands of likes, with fans calling it “the best football Twitter trend ever”, with other clubs now getting on board to have a laugh with it.
Fair to say he took it well when a question was put to him about his face being everywhere online this week. Have a watch below…

Graham Potter on the faceswaps:
“I am aware. It made my 15-year-old son laugh a lot. You have to accept what comes with it. In part it’s criticism, it’s at times ridicule, but that’s the environment we’re in…I’ve got a few more things to think about than that.” pic.twitter.com/Ko0SayioC0

Interviewer: “There is a certain recent trend you made the aware of, the Graham Potter face swap trend, which is basically superimposing your face onto any person or celebrity. Are you aware of this?”
Graham: “Yes I am.”
Interviewer: “How do you feel?”
Graham: “Yeah well it made my 15 year old son laugh a lot. As I said you have to accept what comes with it, which is part of criticism, it’s at times ridicule, but that’s just the environment we’re in and it is what it is.”
On if he has a favourite meme: “No not really, I haven’t given it too much thought and you can imagine I’ve got a few more important things than that to be honest and as I said it is what it is and you have to deal with those things.”
Good response to the faceswap question by Graham Potter:
“The Head Coach’s press conference ends with Potter being asked about the recent social media trend of his face being artificially placed on other players’ and celebrities’ faces, which he says his teenage son had made him… https://t.co/GWHxcAnkSs pic.twitter.com/R0YrDAElh9

Lauren Moore said via their BBC Sport blog: “It would be unusual for Graham Potter to not be in pretty good spirits, and today was no exception.
“Despite knowing the type of questions coming his way concerning the current situation of West Ham, he took it all in his stride and was very clear with the fact that he knows the current performances are nowhere near good enough and that change needs to happen imminently.
“He took full responsibility as manager and wants to make things right for the fans, and asks for some more time and patience as he works hard behind the scenes.
“With my fingers crossed that his good spirits also extend to slightly more ridiculous questions, I waited until the end of the broadcast section to ask whether he had seen the current Graham Potter face swap trend on the internet.
“He thankfully was a very, very good sport and I could finally breathe a sigh of relief that it was off my chest!”
West Ham boss Graham Potter on how difficult the job is: “Every Premier League job is a hard job and that is the facts.
“If you think how many coaches there are in the world and you find yourself as one of the 20 coaches in the Premier League, it’s hard, by definition. Every coach is good and there are resources everywhere.
“Every job is hard and in terms of this one you don’t know how things are before you go in but from the outside I thought this would be a challenge, it is an incredible challenge but an exciting challenge.
“Anything that is worth having in life you have to accept there will be struggle. Football is tough.”
Potter said ‘of course’ he has spoken to the hierarchy at the football club ‘as he does every week’ about the position the club finds itself in.
“Yeah [they were] positive talks but of course we all understand where we are at and we want to improve. Nobody is happy with where we are at but at the same time you have to look at the context and not get caught in the noise.”
On speculation over his future: “It doesn’t affect me and I don’t listen to that. It is part of the noise of the Premier League and it is what you sign up for.
“If results aren’t good, which they haven’t been, then there is always speculation, noise and negativity.”
On team news: “It will still be Aaron [Wan-Bissaka] is still missing with his stomach problem but apart from that everybody is available.”
