Vincent Kompany has described Harry Kane as a “leader” at Bayern Munich and believes he has unfinished business in Germany as speculation continues to link the England captain with a return to the Premier League.
German publication Bild reported on Monday that there is a £56.7million release clause in Kane’s contract that can be activated at the end of the season with Tottenham having first refusal on their former striker.
Kane scored 280 goals for Spurs – and is their record goalscorer – before moving to the Bundesliga in 2023 in the search for trophies.
He finally achieved it last season as Bayern won the title with Kane being named the league’s player of the season as well as top scorer.
Kane still has the hunger – Kompany
The 32-year-old has netted a remarkable 98 goals in 103 games for Bayern and Kompany was happy to talk him up this morning, ahead of tomorrow night’s home game against Werder Bremen.
Asked if Kane could be tempted by a return to England, the Belgian said: “I see that he still has the hunger to win trophies – and he can do that at Bayern.
“He’s always been a goalscorer but I think he’s opened up his game – the way he drops back between the lines… In the end, that allows him to escape him the attention of the defenders. And with that he’s developing further, he’s a leader in the team.
“The way he leads by example, the way he dedicates himself, that shows what great form he’s in. Our hope is that we’ll continue to be very successful with Harry in the future.”
Spurs boss Frank a fan of Kane
Spurs boss Thomas Frank admitted prior to last night’s EFL Cup win over Doncaster Rovers that he would relish the chance to work with Kane, although he expects him to stay at Bayern.
“I didn’t know there was a clause,” Frank said on Tuesday. “He is an unbelievable player who did fantastic for Spurs and is doing fantastic for Bayern. Top player. I think there’s a lot of Tottenham fans, including myself, who would like to see Kane back.
“Personally, I don’t think he will do it right now if I’m honest. He’ll probably stay in Bayern and continue performing well. He was top scorer last year, won the championship and he’s doing fantastic now.
“I don’t know what he’s thinking. Myself, I’m a traveller, I like to travel, I like to explore things as well. He’s been here for many years so why not enjoy the time at Bayern a little bit more? But he’s welcome. If he wants to join us, he’s more than welcome!”
Kane has also been linked with a switch to Manchester United.
