Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr has reaffirmed that Flamengo is the only club he would consider joining should he ever leave the Spanish giants, as speculation grows over his place in Xabi Alonso’s starting plans.
The 24-year-old Brazilian international was left on the bench for Madrid’s Champions League opener against Marseille on Tuesday, raising questions about his long-term role under the club’s new manager. Alonso opted to start Rodrygo, Arda Güler and teenage sensation Franco Mastantuono in attack, alongside marquee summer signing Kylian Mbappé.
Madrid secured a 2-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu thanks to two second-half penalties from Mbappé. Vinicius was introduced in the 63rd minute, replacing Rodrygo, but drew as much attention for his post-match message as for his cameo appearance.
On Wednesday, the forward shared a black-and-white image of himself leaving the pitch shirtless, accompanied by the caption “Principles of a Champion.” The post has been widely interpreted as a reflection on his competitive spirit and, for some, a possible hint of frustration over reduced minutes.

Despite the speculation, Vinicius has repeatedly stated that Flamengo, the club where he began his career, is the only team that could tempt him away from the Bernabéu.
“I think I could stay here [at Real Madrid] my whole career, but the club of my life is Flamengo,” he told French outlet L’Équipe in 2023.
He praised life in Madrid, emphasizing the city’s impact on him and his family. “I love life here in general, and it’s going well for my family too. When my loved ones walk around, they are recognized and they wish us nothing but happiness. Little by little, I discovered this new life, new emotions, a fervor… Madrid is unique,” he said.
Vinicius came through Flamengo’s youth ranks, making 69 senior appearances before completing a €45m move to Madrid in 2018. Since then, he has become one of La Liga’s most dangerous wingers, winning two league titles and playing a key role in the club’s 2022 Champions League triumph.
Madrid return to La Liga action on Saturday against Espanyol. Fans will be eager to see whether Alonso restores Vinicius to the starting XI or continues to experiment with his new-look attack.
