The arrival of the eleventh team in Formula 1, Cadillac, has not been welcomed by everyone and has even attracted a fair share of criticism. However, Sir Lewis Hamilton is enthusiastic about this decision.
A good mix of teams for 2026
“I think we have a good mix on the grid. It’s fantastic to have another team, and I think that in order to develop the team, it is necessary to have experienced drivers, especially when the team is completely new,” he admitted.
“They have two different approaches coming from Red Bull and Mercedes, with different knowledge and experience that both can bring to help the team progress quickly,” he continued, referring to Cadillac’s recently announced lineup.
Hamilton worked with Valtteri Bottas for several years at Mercedes, and he has often admitted to respecting him as a driver and being happy for this new opportunity for the Finn. In addition, Sergio Perez worked alongside Max Verstappen at Red Bull, so both come from one of the top teams in Formula 1.
Alongside Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas, the team has also signed other drivers, mechanics, and engineers who have already taken part in the top category of motorsport, in order to have solid foundations for this new journey.
The approval of the eleventh team came in March 2025 thanks to the involvement of General Motors in the project, after an initial rejection. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem declared: “The presence of the Cadillac Formula 1 Team in the paddock will inspire future competitors and fans. Their participation strengthens our mission to push the boundaries of motorsport at the highest level.”
