Delhi Air Pollution Prompts Travel Advisories From Singapore, Canada, U.K.

Flights canceled due to poor visibility in Delhi.

Delhi’s hazardous air pollution has prompted countries around the world to urge their citizens to exercise caution. The Singapore High Commission issued an advisory for Singaporeans living in Delhi and the surrounding regions. Meanwhile, Canada and the U.K. also advised caution for their citizens traveling across northern cities.

For the past few weeks, the Indian capital has experienced severe pollution levels. This week, however, conditions deteriorated further, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) touching 500 (under 50 is considered healthy). More than 100 flights were canceled due to poor visibility as thick smog covered the capital, and trains were delayed by several hours.

Amid the ongoing pollution crisis, the Singapore High Commission in New Delhi tweeted that the government has implemented the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage 4, the strictest set of restrictions, which limit construction and industrial emissions. Schools and offices have also been asked to function in a hybrid mode, and citizens are urged to avoid outdoor activities, especially children and those with respiratory or cardiac illnesses. When stepping out, use masks, the advisory says, as it urges citizens to pay heed to local advice. In addition, the commission noted that travel may be disrupted and travelers should check with airlines for updates.

The Indian government monitors air pollution levels up to 500, and data beyond that level is not registered, so international readings often differ. GRAP Stage 4 is triggered when the AQI exceeds 450 to prevent further deterioration in air quality. Polluting vehicles are restricted, while construction and demolition work are halted; mining and stone-crushing operations are also stopped. Residents are advised to avoid all outdoor activities, including exercise, when air quality turns severe or hazardous. If stepping out is unavoidable, wearing a mask is recommended. Pollution is worse during peak commuting hours, so residents are advised to stay indoors in the mornings and late evenings when possible.

Home to more than 30 million people, Delhi is among the most polluted cities in the world. Multiple factors contribute to the poor air quality, including vehicular pollution, industrial emissions, falling temperatures, low wind speeds, and the seasonal burning of crops. Exposure to polluted air is a significant health hazard and can cause heart disease, lung cancer, and chronic respiratory distress. Expectant mothers, children, and older adults are especially vulnerable. In Delhi, the problem is particularly severe, with pollution reducing residents’ life expectancy by an estimated 12 years.

The U.K. Foreign Office also includes a disclaimer about air pollution in India in its travel advisory, warning that it is a major health hazard during the winter months, especially in the north. ā€œChildren, the elderly and those with pre-existing medical conditions may be especially affected. If you’re pregnant or have a respiratory or heart condition, you may wish to consult a medical practitioner before you travel.ā€

Canada’s travel advisory also addresses natural disasters and climate conditions, cautioning that air pollution is extremely hazardous in many cities. ā€œMonitor air pollution levels, which change quickly, especially if you suffer from respiratory ailments or have pre-existing medical conditions,ā€ it advises. The advisory also urges travelers to limit outdoor activities and monitor local media during periods of high pollution.
