Eversheds Sutherland appoints new Asia technology head | Hong Kong

Albert Yuen

Eversheds Sutherland has hired veteran technology lawyer Albert Yuen as a partner at its Hong Kong office, succeeding Rhys McWhirter as head of the firm’s technology, data and cyber practice in Asia.

McWhirter has departed the firm to join Latham & Watkins.

Yuen brings more than 25 years of experience in the technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) sector. Before joining Eversheds Sutherland, he led Linklaters’ Hong Kong TMT practice as a corporate technology lawyer, advising on both local and international matters.

Yuen has practised across multiple jurisdictions. Prior to Linklaters, he headed the TMT practice at Osborne Clarke’s Hong Kong office. Earlier in his career, he worked in Australia, Myanmar and the US, holding roles at Gilbert + Tobin, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher and Mayer Brown. He also completed client secondments at Telstra in Australia and Ooredoo Myanmar.

His expertise spans complex technology and telecoms transactions, data infrastructure projects, fintech, data and cybersecurity, commercial IP, cross-border cloud services, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and blockchain.

“Technology is a core pillar of our global practice,” said Simon Gamlin, partner and head of commercial advisory practice at Eversheds Sutherland. He added that Yuen’s arrival will strengthen the firm’s capabilities in financial services, telecommunications, energy and data infrastructure.
