It’s largely agreed upon that fall is one of the best seasons to dress for, with its endless opportunities for layering that don’t involve bulky winter jackets. This year, fall trends are skewing more timeless and wearable than ever before, making it easy to build a fashionable yet functional travel wardrobe with a little more staying power.
To get a clearer picture of the biggest trends of the season, we turned to California-based men’s fashion buyer Emily Kitts and New York City-based fashion stylist Gabrielle Porcaro to learn about their favorite styles for fall—plus, how to integrate them into your packing list. From bright pops of color to unexpected layering pieces, keep reading to find the five most travel-friendly fall trends you’ll want to try for yourself this season, starting at just $17 at Amazon.
The Trend: Modern Prep
Preppy style is back this season, but this time, with a modern twist. According to Kitts, this layering-heavy trend is perfect for traveling thanks to its versatility, and she recommends snagging a classic Oxford as the base for a number of outfits. She explains that while they’re able to be styled on their own, Oxfords can also be “worn under a rugby polo, a chunky cable knit sweater, or a brushed argyle sweater,” adding, “You can also dress it down by pairing it with some track pants!”
With just a few thoughtful additions to your packing list (think cozy button-down cardigans and collared basics), you can mix and match this trend throughout your trip. And the look doesn’t have to be stuffy, either—the baggier, more oversized your picks, the more casual they’ll look.
The Trend: Menswear Prints
Menswear style often includes a number of timeless prints like plaid, houndstooth, and heritage checks, and Kitts notes that these patterns are having a major moment this fall, making them valuable additions to your packing list. Classic prints can add a pop of personality to any outfit while still remaining versatile and easy to style, even if you’re just dipping your toe into the look (which also carries preppy undertones). Kitts explains that this season, the appearance of the print differs from past trends, sharing, “We are used to seeing it in pants or blazers, but now we are seeing it in sweaters, barn jackets, trench coats, and dresses.”
As for how to test out the look within your own travel wardrobe, Kitts suggests snagging a statement jacket in one of these prints so you can stay cozy in a traditional silhouette while still showing off your style. “The print helps it remain classic, but the print makes it unique,” she says.
The Trend: Suede
Suede never really goes out of style, but it’s especially trendy this year—especially when it comes to accessories. Luckily, this is a super wearable, packable fad that’s easy to include in your travel wardrobe, even if you’re looking to keep sustainability in mind (suede is a brushed leather, after all). “There are so many strong vegan suede options now that eliminate the need to understand care instructions, which is perfect for travel,” says Kitts.
When you’re adding suede accessories to your travel wardrobe, think about how you can marry both fashion and function. As Kitts explains, “A belt easily elevates an outfit and a large tote doubles as both a personal item on the flight and a purse while traveling.”
The Trend: Bright Red
Bright pops of color are just about everywhere this fall, but there’s one shade that stands apart from the rest: vibrant red. The bold, eye-catching hue has been making a statement this season, and Porcaro notes that it’s one trend that you won’t struggle to blend into your seasonal travel wardrobe. Porcaro explains, “As one of the must-wear colors of fall, bright pops of red are being shown off all over—from hats to coats to shoes.”
Color trends are easy to make your own since you can opt for silhouettes and styles you feel most comfortable in, and Porcaro advises, “Pick one statement piece—perhaps a red wool coat or retro-looking sneakers—and it will make all your travel looks and photos pop.” If you’re feeling timid around color and are more used to wearing neutrals, dip your toe in (literally) with a bright pair of shoes. But if you’re ready to make a bigger statement, a crimson jacket is the way to go.
The Trend: Lingerie All Day
Lingerie may generally be reserved for the bedroom, but according to Porcaro, it’s one of the most significant streetwear trends this fall that’s also a breeze to style and pack for your travels. By nature, each piece is incredibly lightweight and breathable, taking up minimal space in your suitcase, and while it can be worn as a look of its own, lingerie can also be great for layering. Porcaro explains, “I’ve been seeing slip dresses layered under blazers with heeled boots and lace peeking out on necklines and on hems.”
When testing this trend within your travels, Porcaro suggests starting by packing a silky cami with a lace hem to wear beneath a simple T-shirt or sweater to give a feminine touch to any outfit. This is also especially easy to transition into the evening by wearing just the camisole as a top. Just make sure to roll your silk or satin pieces when packing in order to limit wrinkles, and even pack a wrinkle-release spray for when you’re in a pinch.
