Since 2021, Apple AirTags have been helping customers locate their lost keys, wallets, cars, and even beloved pets. Now, the tech giant is making it easier than ever for travelers to use these GPS trackers to reunite with their lost luggage.
Last November, Apple introduced a new feature for the Find My app called Share Item Location. This feature allows you to share the location of your AirTag with your family, friends, or in this case, airline customer service agents and baggage handlers, via a unique link. Thanks to this tool, your airline can now monitor your checked bag’s current location at the same time as you without you having to be present; previously, you might have found yourself stuck waiting at the baggage claim desk, using your phone to point out where your MIA luggage might be.

Initially, Apple shared that 18 commercial airlines, including Delta, United, and Lufthansa, would soon begin accepting Find My item locations of their passengers’ checked bags. According to a spokesperson with Apple, that number has now grown to 36 airlines worldwide and counting, with American Airlines and JetBlue joining the list this year.
While all of these participating airlines allow you to share your AirTag’s location with airline agents through email or delayed baggage forms, some airlines, like Delta, United, and Lufthansa, give you the ability to share and track it from their respective smartphone applications.

“While more than 99 percent of checked items make it to their destination as planned, we know how stressful it can be for customers when they don’t,” said Erik Snell, Delta’s Chief Customer Experience Officer, in the 2024 press release. “That’s why we’re excited to support Share Item Location beginning later this year. It will provide our team with extra visibility to reunite those items with their owners.”
